INTRO: Missouri lawmakers overwhelmingly struck down a proposal today (Tuesday) to ban eminent domain. From the state capitol, Hayley Salvo has more.
Rural Southwest Missouri Democrat J.C. Kussner proposed legislation in the House to ban Tax Increment Financing projects that might use land seized through eminent domain. The amendment to the TIF bill that was passed by a voice vote earlier in the session, would have prevented business stationed in a community for several generations from being uprooted.
"That mom and pops made a living there all those years, and we don't want to sell that because of condemnation. This bill simply says that if you use condemnation or eminent domain to seize property, that you can not use TIFs"
Kuessner's amendment overwhelmingly failed by a vote of 129 to 26.
