Missouri's House Budget Committee chair Carl Bearden says increased revenue collections should be released to education... even if it means funding-levies would be defeated. Erin Israel tells how more money could mean less for schools.
State representative Carl Bearden says voters should expect levies for many Missouri school districts on the upcoming ballot.
However, if the governor releases money for education, Bearden says those levies will be doomed.
"IF THEY GET THE MONEY FROM THE STATE I THINK MOST PEOPLE WILL SAY THEN YOU DON'T NEED ANY MORE OF MY MONEY. SO, I THINK HE'S BOXED HIMSLEF IN, AND THE SCHOOLS WILL NOT GET ANY MONEY FROM WITHOLDINGS UNTIL PROBABLY MAY AT THE EARLIEST."
Bearden thinks the governor will not release the funds, saying he can't help but think the governor considered the levies in his decision.
However, the governor's communication director says the governor will release money for education when he feels it is fiscally responsible.
From the state capitol, I'm Erin Israel.
