Hundreds of home-school students and parents converged on the state Capitol today/ or Tuesday to make their voices heard. Joe Stange has the story from Jefferson City.
The crowd of home-schooled students didn't need permission slips to skip class today. Their parents were right there with them, all on hand to protest one bill offered by a Kansas City lawmaker.
The plan would require the students to submit to a state-run assessment test. Home-schoolers say the test would force them to obey a cirriculum they've gone through some trouble to avoid.
Heather Summers, 18, home-schooled by her mother in the St. Louis area, said changes do need to be made but assessment tests are not among them.
Rep. Bill Skaggs, the bill's sponsor, suggested that if home schoolers are so successful, why not take the state tests and show the world what they can do?
