A House-Senate conference committee gave up last night trying to work out a compromise on the governor's grocery tax cut plan. Phill Brooks reports that the committee adjourned shortly after charges of bigotry were raised:
The conference committee gave up shortly after House Speaker Steve Gaw was accused of bigotry for his opposition to tax credits for private and parochial school costs.
The charge was leveled by St. Louis City Senator John Scott against the House Speaker.
It came after Scott heard the Speaker again make it clear that the House would not support a grocery-tax sales tax cut bill that included a tax break for private and parochial school costs:
Later, Scott said he did not mean to accuse the speaker of bigotry -- and apologized if he had done so.
It is the second week in a row that a St. Louis area Catholic senator has charged bigotry for opposition to proposal to provide tax deductions for private school costs.
