3-cent sales tax on food passes

Following House approval and three hours of Senate debate the General Assembly passes a bill that would cut the sales tax on food to three cents.

Rod Petersen has more from the State Capitol.

Despite a three hour filibuster by Democrat John Schneider and other Senate Republicans the Senate finally approved the house-passed bill which would decrease the tax cut on food to three cents.

The lynchpin in the debate included a provision that would give tax deductions to private and parochial schools.

Schneider, a major backer of the amendment, proposed that the Senate send the bill back to the House with the school tax deductions.

Neither Majority Floor Leader Ed Quick or President Pro-Tem Bill McKenna would agree to that until the Senate voted on the sales tax for food.

Finally, Schneider and other backers of the private school deduction relented and let the sales tax cut come to a vote.

The bill passed 31-3 in the Senate and is expected to be signed by the govenor.
