Over four thousand disabled children in Missouri have been denied supplemental security income benefits due to tighter eligibility requirements in the 1996 Welfare Reform Act. From Jefferson City, Beejal Patel has the story.
Under the new rules, Congress made it harder for families to claim benefits if their children are disabled.
Children who have been receiving benefits up until now for disabilities such as attention deficit disorders are the ones most often denied future benefits.
Peter DeSimone is the executive director of Missouri Association for Social Welfare:
Families who receive notice their child's benefits will be discontinued have 10 days to request continuation of benefits and 60 days to appeal.
