Abortion Rights Activists Oppose Senate Bill

The 1997 abortion debate has begun in the Missouri legislature. Beth Bentley has the story from Jefferson City.

Kansas City Senator Harry Wiggins urged the Senate Health Committee to approve legislation that would restrict where abortions could be performed.

But is proposal sparked opposition from several abortion rights organizations.

M'Evie Mead is executive director of the Missouri National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League.

She says the bill would only create legal hurdles for abortion providers.

Contents: "I think the bill is part of an ongoing strategy that the anti-choice movement has resorted to since they have been unable to make all abortions illegal because the public is not with them. They're trying to make abortions inaccessible."

Mead says the bill would harm women by driving capable physicians out of the state.
